There are lots of very good Hindi movies, and then there are some great ones, the unforgettable ones! Here is a compilation of those memorable films – the top 100 Bollywood films from Indian cinema…

When it comes to the best Bollywood movies, the tastes differ and the favorites vary.Some like a well told story, others prefer comedy and yet others enjoy action packed flicks.

Please note that this is not a list of top grossing movies or most popular action films or films with the best music…. A good movie can be many things: a great work of art, a brilliant piece of entertainment, thought provoking subject-matter, a great depiction of an era or a social aspect…..One way to select ‘great’ films is to look back and think of the movies that are unforgettable, the movies that leave a lasting impression, the films that you love without effort.

Now, here is the list of those great movies:

1. Mother India (1957): This films is the ultimate trend-setter of Hindi cinema and a legend in its own right. The first Indian movie to be nominated for Oscar, this is one of the highest ranked Hindi movies in the international film festivals. The cast of Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kumar delivers a brilliant acting. Superb music and an evolving storyline are the hallmarks of this classic gem.

2. Sholay (1975): This film needs no introduction. The dialogues, the story, the cast, the acting…everything is so refreshing. The story moves at its own natural pace. The mega cast includes Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjad Khan.

3. Pakeezah (1972): A legendary movie from the 70s; with a larger than life appeal. Beautifully directed by Kamal Amrohi, this movie is a combination of good artistic tastes, lovely costumes, a fluid story line and melodious music. The film is a story of a Lucknow tawaif (courtesan) played by actress Meena Kumari. Raaj Kumar and Ashok Kumar lead the cast.

4. Mughal-e-Azam :This is one of the most expensive Hindi movies ever made of its times. It took more than 9 years to complete this feature. The star cast is ultimate; the dance sets are unparalleled for its time. Some of the famous dance sequences of Madhubala are filmed in the Shish Mahal -The Palace of Mirrors- in Lahore Shahi Qila.

5. Guide (1965): This is another masterpieces of the Indian film industry. Based on the critically acclaimed novel, ‘The Guide’ by R. K. Narayan, this is a moving and memorable story. The acting from Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman is top-notch, as always. The melodious soundtrack is memorable highlight of this film

6. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha: Gadar redefined Box-office success in hindi Cinema. A great script, brilliant dialogues, remarkable acting and very entertaining…. Set in 1947, during the Partition of India, the film tells the story of a truck driver, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), a Jatt Sikh, who falls in love with a Muslim girl, Sakina (Amisha Patel).

7. Bobby (1973): The movie is a brilliant combination of romance, music and social conflicts. This blockbuster is known to be a trend-setter in its own rights. Raj Kapoor introduced the genre of teenage romance with a rich-vs.-poor clash as a backdrop. Some of the romance scenes were simply too bold for its time. This popular flick was a debut film for Dimple Kapadia and the first leading role for Rishi Kapoor.
