Tiger Zinda Hai: The film is a sequel to the 2012 Hindi film Ek Tha Tiger and the second installment of the Tiger film series. The movie is based on the 2014 abduction of Indian nurses by ISIL. The film stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Sajjad Delfrooz in leading roles, with Angad Bedi, Kumud Mishra, Nawab Shah, Girish Karnad and Paresh Rawal in supporting roles. This mega action thriller is co-written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar.
Raees is an Indian film falling somewhere in between the crime and action genres. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles. Raees was said to be based on criminal Abdul Latif’s life, though not officially. It is directed by Rahul Dholakia and produced by Gauri Khan, Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under their banners Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment. The film was released on 25 January 2017 to coincide with Republic Day weekend.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania This is another artistic romantic comedy from Bollywood. A small town couple falls in love despite the fact that they disagree on everything and have opposite opinion on everything in life. Directed by Shashank Khaitan, and produced by Karan Johar, the movie stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead. This is the follow-up of the Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. At the 63rd Filmfare Awards, the film received eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress
Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana: This is romantic drama film directed by Ratnaa Sinha. The film stars Rajkumar Rao, and Kriti Kharbanda in the lead roles. The pair meet for a proposed arranged marriage and fall in love in the process. However, on the night of their marriage, an unexpected turn of events leads to new twists and new realities of Indian society. The movie is produced by Vinod Bachchan.
Lipstick Under My Burkha: Alankrita Shrivastava’s beautiful drama explores the sexual awakenings and personal struggles of four small-town Indian women, their problems, dreams and fantasies are very relatable for a common Indian – home or abroad. Hindi Medium: This is a comedy-drama film, written by Zeenat Lakhani and directed by Saket Chaudhary. The film features Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar in the lead roles. Irrfan Khan gives another memorable performance, not that we expect anything less from this brilliant actor. The film exposes the duplicity of India’s educational system and the class divide created by English language. Secret Superstar: This is a beautifully done musical drama film, written and directed by Advait Chandan, and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. Zaira Wasim, Meher Vij, Raj Arjun, and Aamir Khan are the lead actors. This is a coming-of-age story of a teenage girl who aspires to be a singer. The movie deals with the issues of feminism and domestic violence. The film has received critical acclaim, and earned Zaira Wasim the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement.
Jolly LLB 2: This a courtroom drama with India’s judiciary and police corruption at the center, and with a very with realistic story flow. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor in lead roles. The film is a sequel to the 2013 Jolly LLB starring Arshad Warsi. Saurabh Shukla has a solid performance as the eccentric judge.
Newton This is a comedy drama film staring Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav. A government clerk on election duty is in the middle of this beautiful drama. In a conflicted political atmosphere, he tries his best for a fair voting process in spite of the biased security forces and the fear of communist forces’ attacks. The film got many nominations at the 63rd Filmfare Awards, including Critics awards for Best Film and Best Actor for Rao. It won the Best Film (critics) and Filmfare Award for Best Story. It was also selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
Anaarkali of Aarah: This small-budget and small-town film is written and directed by Avinash Das. The movie has Swara Bhaskar playing the lead role of a small-town folk dancer in Arrah in Bihar. This is an engaging but raunchy musical drama that focuses on the exploitation of a singer-dancer at the hands of powerful men in rural Bihar. Swara Bhaskar gives a feisty, intense and entertaining performance.
Bareilly Ki Barfi is another critically acclaimed romantic comedy film, directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. The film stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles and Rajkummar Rao playing a key role. The movie storyline is based on the French novel ‘The Ingredients of Love’ written by Nicolas Barreau. The film got eight nominations at the 63rd Filmfare Awards, including Best Film (critics), Best Supporting Actress for Rao. The movie won Best Director and Best Supporting Actor awards.
Kaabil: This is another crime thriller film of 2017 directed by Sanjay Gupta, written by Vijay Kumar Mishra, produced by Rakesh Roshan under his banner FilmKraft Productions. It features a love affair between two blind people, played by Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam. Hrithik gives a solid performance as a blind lover who seeks revenge against a corrupt politician his wife is raped and killed.The melodious music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
Jagga Jasoos: This is a beautifully done Indian mystery and comedy adventure film written and directed by Anurag Basu. The film features Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in lead roles, and tells the story of a teenage detective in search of his missing father. This light-hearted comic journey is full of unexpected yet pleasant turns and twists.The film is produced by Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor.
