The Pakistan Flooding and the Indian offer to help
In the name of the religion, or out of fear, or out of greed – the mankind has shown its ugly side for centuries. Time over time, we have proved that we can be idiots, stupids and morons – all combined in one. Before the partition of 1947, the Indian Continent had a seamless and peaceful coexistence of multi-cultures and multi-religions. What followed during the 1940s decade was something that would have been incomprehensible a few years before the partition – hundreds of thousands dead, rape and loot in the open, a lawless society attacking their own neighbors with vengeance, the same neighbors they had treated like their own before the riots.
Fast forward to 2010. Pakistan is suffering one of the worst crisis since partition – the mother nature has shown its ugly side this time. Beginning in July 2010 following heavy monsoon rains, a vast spread flooding has surprised Pakistan in the worst possible way. Thousands dead, over a million homes destroyed, more than twenty million people injured or homeless….. At one point, one-fifth of Pakistan’s total land area was underwater.
At a difficult and a tragic time like this, India has offered what a natural neighbor should always do – help the neighbor during crisis even if you don’t get along. India has offered $5 million in aid to Pakistan for flood relief. This could be a start of something good, something different than war-path of last 60 years. This could help the two sides to heal their wounds and perhaps start something anew.
However, when it comes to Indo-Pak relations, optimism and trust is not something you should look for. Instead of promoting a new relation among two fighting nations, Pakistani media has its own take on India’s helping hand. Some newspapers in Pakistan are already advocating that they should turn down India’s monetary offer to help, and they should only accept if India leave Kashmir alone.
Even though this is not surprising, it certainly is not a response you would expect from the media of a country suffering the dire consequences of severe flooding. There seem to be major disconnect here, as always.
It is not politics, it’s not religion – it is plain stupidity. Someone should go ask the starving families, someone should ask the isolated and misplaced victims of flood if they have a choice, if they would accept the food and clothing only if their condition on Kashmir are met.
An average person in general does not care about the political issues, especially during the rough goings and tough times. Politics is something last on your mind when you and your family are in the survival mode. Every ticking second reminds of the hunger and the personal loss. Bringing in the Kashmir issue is a narrow mindedness, pure and simple.
While some of the media and politicians will always find a way to promote negative agenda, we can only hope that the wisdom prevails in this case. Lets hope that some morons sitting in their comfy offices are not deciding against the fate of helpless flood victims. You know what will happen if a few morons like this get to collaborate. A negative action from one side always generate an equal or worse negative reaction from the other side. So, all this could become a trigger to invite more morons, stupids and idiots from both sides of the borer. That’s how it has always started – the fear, the greed and the politics of religions takes over the thinking of average masses, resulting in a few morons controlling the fate of millions.
It would be marvelous to see for a change that sanity of cool minds prevails and Pakistan accept the helping hand. Let’s hope the two countries for once be something that they should always been – the good neighbors.
