THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA Preamble:

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;

and to promote among them all

FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HERE BY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.

Passed by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA came into effect on January 26, 1950.

It is the longest written constitution of any sovereign country in the world, containing 395 articles in 22 parts, 14 schedules and 94 amendments, for a total of 117,369 words in the English language version.

The Republic Day of India marks the anniversary of the adoption of this Constitution and the transition of India from a British Dominion to a republic sovereign nation.
