Prime Minister Manmohan Singh continues to remind NRIs abroad that they are always welcome back home in India, perhaps more than ever before!

During his visit to USA in November, Prime Minister used the term “brain gain” instead of “reverse brain drain”. Thanking the Indian-American community for their contribution in building bridges between India and the United States, he invited the Indian diaspora worldwide to return home.
“Let me take this opportunity to extend an invitation to all Indian Americans and non-resident Indians who wish to return home to India in one capacity or another,” said Manmohan Singh. The Prime Minister said that Indian-Americans no longer had to make a choice about whether to work in India or America, “Modern technology and our flexible policies have opened possibilities of working in both places.”

The NRIs courting continues. On January 8, the PM once again made some very firm predictions and asserted his intention to welcome NRIs as a part of the Indian democracy.
“I recognize the legitimate desire of Indians living abroad to exercise their franchise and to have a say in who governs India…”
“We are working on this issue and I sincerely hope that they will get a chance to vote by the time of the next regular general elections,” the Prime Minister said while addressing the gathering at the eighth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Indian Diaspora/NRI Day).

He went on to add, “In fact, I would go a step further and ask why more overseas Indians should not return home to join politics and public life as they are increasingly doing in business and academia.”

AS you can see, the Prime Minister continue to express the desire of Indian Government, – at every opportunity he gets – to welcome overseas NRIs to participate in all walks of Indian life including public and political sectors.

According to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, the vast overseas Indian community is estimated at 25 million, spread over 110 countries, and is one of the most affluent immigrant communities in the world.

Chak De India! :)
