Today is the first day, first day of back-to-work after the New-Year break.
However, there is nothing new.
Nothing has changed.
The same office, the same routine and the same old everything….

We put so much stock in the New Year – waiting for it, looking forward to another milestone.
The anticipation and the significance of midnight turning into a dawn of next calendar year;
Celebrating it like there is no tomorrow.
In this case, because there is a tomorrow – the New Year!

The ritual is repeated every year.
On the last days of December, we reflect on the year gone by – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
And then, we look forward to the New Year with new hope.
As if nothing will be bad or ugly after the clock strikes midnight – only good.

The resolutions are penned down; new resolutions.
However, there is often nothing new about these resolutions, or the wish list.
Most of the resolutions are same old;
Most of the wishes are what we always wanted, even in the previous year.

And then, the New Year rolls in – by one day, and the next day…
The new born commitment to a better tomorrow fades after a few days.
The ‘same old’ schedule;
The same old routine continues in a brand new Year.

It is good that we get a chance to reflect on the past; we look back on the days gone by.
But, very little changes in an overnight; or a day.
It is a new day, it is a new year, but that is about it;
The change takes time, we seldom realize.

And, what about the resolutions of New Year eve?
What about all the promises we made to ourselves?

Well, there is time for everything.
We first have to worry about the same old things that we always worry about.
The same fears, the same old needs still stand in the doorway of our thoughts.
We have to worry about today first, to resolve the present.

The New Year resolutions can wait,
We will think about them later.
May be much later…
May be on the next New Year eve.

Have a Good New Day!!
Or, to keep it vague, let us stick with what we have always said:
Have a Good Day!
Um…and a Happy New Year! :)
